A study led by Y.Z. Zhang published in the January 1994 Official Journal of Chinese modern developments concluded Andrographis has potential for the prevention of heart attacks and atherosclerosis. It inhibits the formation of blood clots and also prevents restenosis, a condition where the arteries reclog after angioplasty. Also changes the way blood vessels respond to calcium, which remain open.

Andrographis has been used for thousands of years and one of the most famous applications is to stimulate immunity against colds, flu and fever. It prevents infection with rhinoviruses, which are responsible for the majority of colds. It also relieves many symptoms of these diseases, such as a runny nose, fever, sore throat, body aches and fatigue. A double-blind study conducted by D. Caceres published in a 1997 edition of Phytomedicine found that taking 200 mg per day of Can Jang, a commercially prepared supplement Andrographis, during the cold season reduced the chances of catching a cold by more than 50 percent.

Chang performed at the University of California, that were in the May 1991 Proceedings of the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine published this herb was found against HIV in different ways. First, it prevents the HIV virus from attaching itself to healthy T-cells, which are vital for maintaining a good immune function. It also inhibits the ability of the virus with an enzyme that forces T-cells to make copies of the virus to activate. Finally stop the virus from activating a mechanism that causes infected T-cells to die. Since this herb many of the same functions as drugs for the treatment of this disease is doing, may contribute to reducing the amount of pharmaceuticals used, thus reducing side effects.
